Advocating Public Policy

What is Public Policy?
public policy - n. - The public interest or public good as expressed in principles that guide the interpretation and enforcement of the law: Contract provisions waiving legal rights may be held void as against public policy.

A principle that no person or government official can legally perform an act that tends to injure the public.

1st Question: Why are uses regulated? Answer? To limit harm.

2nd Question: Why allow a harmful project into an established community if it provides no benefits?

Environmental Public Policy Issues

1. Local Infrastructure

Developments, Industrial Parks, Roads & Bridges, Farms, Water Ways

Water Systems, Septic Systems both (private and municipally funded)

How well are they designed, what can they support?

2. Stream Protection

Preserving Cold Water Fisheries

Plants & Wildlife Species Protection

Identification of Environmentally Sensitive Areas, Wetlands

Risks of land development projects in the flood zone

3. Land Conservation

Results from de-forestation

Preservation of natural habitats

4. Water Conservation

How does corporate control and purchase of water benefit a community?

More importantly does the benefit outweigh the potential harm?

Quality and Quantity
